Selimiye, situated 45 kilometers (about 28 miles) from Marmaris via the Hisarönü road on one of the most beautiful coves of Hisarönü Bay, is a working village where locals make a small living from farming or fishing. Most of the local inhabitants have a house cow and a few sheep and goats. Others fish, and supply the local restaurants. The population of the village is around 1100.

Selimiye is an important village in terms of landscape and ancient ruins. When almond-trees are in blossom, the view is truly a sight for sore eyes. The full moon that rises over the western side of the bay is the most stunning in the vicinity and the undulating road leading to Bozburun offers lovely panoramic views of the bay.

Tourists have only been coming to Selimiye for the last 20 years - when the new road opened - and this has boosted the local ecconomy. Before this the only way to reach the village was by boat.

Selimiye's shoreline has beaches in some places, and is rocky in others.

Selimiye is a fishing-village that nature-loving tourists who come to Marmaris quietly discover on their own; and has lovely scenery, a modest lifestyle, and amicable people.

 

There are several restaurants in Selimiye (around 14 at the last count) mostly run by local people and their families. The restaurants range from the most sophisiticated (Sardunya, for fish....Auroa for Ottoman food) to the most simple (Osman's and Selina for bbq grilled meats and fish). Selimiye boasts perhaps the freshest and most delicious fish in the region.

Selimiye also boasts a few guest houses, hotels, motels and pensions if you are looking for a quite place to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Fethiye, Marmaris and Olu Deniz.

Jenny's House for example is a lovely family owned and run guest house just outside Selimiye, a few minutes walk from one of the the many beaches and close to several important historical ruins.

Owner, Englishwoman Jenny Orhan and her Turkish husband Metin welcome guests with traditional Turkish hospitality. An ideal place for families, couples and walkers looking to find the true Turkey, Jenny's House caters for up to 16 guests and is open all year.

Close by is Villa Manzara. The Stone House apartments of Villa Manzara set amongst mature almond, orange and fig trees in a big garden overlooking the bay of Selimiye.

Situated in the green and mountainous periphery of the tourism center of Marmaris, the apartment is located 60m above sea level in the hills with a beautiful panaroma of the Selimiye bay. Its magnificent setting offers a majestic view of the Selimiye village and the surrounding almond and pine covered mountains, from where cool breezes bring relief even during the hot summer months.

There are plenty of walks to do in Selimiye including a lovely walk to Kuzel Koy passing the byzantine ruins along the way. The walk is uphill but well worth it. You can also take a stroll to the seaside restaurants to spend the day, lazing on the sun loungers next to clear blue waters. After a nice long lunch you can work it off with a stroll back to your guest house or hotel If you are looking for a bit more adventure then the walk to Bozburun is for you...a glourious walk up and over the mountians the views are amazing and probably not a person in sight - except maybe a tortoise or two! The walk takes about 3 hours. You can return to Selimiye by local dolmus.

Local boat trips in Selimiye are a must.

Take a small fishing boat with Durelli as your captain (max 4 guest.approx €90 for the day), drop anchor whereever you fancy, swim in the cool clear blue waters or head out to the Dennis (sea) Restaurant for a delicious fish meal which is a 40 min boat ride away from Selimiye.

The restaurant is in a small bay where there is no road so the vegetables are grown at the garden out the back!! Drinks and meat come by boat from Bozburun! The food here is amazing, lunch times are not too busy but nights are full of the saliing boats sailing round the area.

Summary: The whole area is ideal for walking or mountain biking. The walk over the hills to Bozburun and the climb to the small fortress overlooking the village. Historical ruins of Roman, Byzantium and Ottoman era are an integral feature of the locality.
